Things to Do In and Around Birmingham for Labor Day Weekend 2017

Labor Day is a National Holiday; we are out of school, banks and post offices are closed, pretty much those daily things you rely on are closed.  Let’s take a closer look at some creative things you can do or you can do with your children on Labor Day.  Birmingham has a lot to offer right outside of our back door!

There will be a 26th Annual Labor Day Celebration and Moon Pie Eating Contest in McCalla starting Monday, 9/4, at 9 a.m.  This location is actually Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park.  There, you can participate in this fun pie eating contest event, and you are competing for prize money in both adult and children’s categories.  Across the park, the United Mine Workers hold their Annual District Labor Day Celebration.  There is plenty of great BBQ and some “picking and singing,” too!  Source:

Many local stores are having Labor Day sales so if it rains, there is a good excuse to shop some great deals!

Our Lady of the Lourdes Church’s festival includes more than 50 arts and crafts booths.  Attractions include pony rides and a garage sale.  Prizes will be raffled off and food will be available.  Proceeds from the festival will benefit the Optimists Kards for Kids program.  Admission is free, but for information call ahead, 836-2274.

Also as an attraction, there is a Caribbean Day at the Park on Sunday, September 3 from 11 am to 7 pm in Huntsville. A day of games, Caribbean food and reggae music, hosted by the Caribbean Association of North America.  Location is Stoner Field Park, on Stringfield Road in Huntsville. Admission is free but look up for more information such as time and date,

Don’t forget about college football on Labor Day Weekend! Alabama plays Florida State on Saturday, September 2nd at 7 pm, and Auburn plays GA Southern on Saturday, September 2nd at 6:30 pm. And don’t forget about our beloved UAB Blazers taking on Alabama A&M on Saturday, September 2nd at Legion Field at 2:30 pm.

I hope this will give you some fun ideas. Please call ahead or go online to the specified location and get all the information for these events. Plans can change and we don’t want you to get stuck!
