Birmingham Moms Blog :: Introducing Molly

Hey y’all!

Welcome to my very first post on Birmingham Moms Blog (BMB)! I am so excited to share and connect with you. Without further ado, here are my brief thoughts on Birmingham, motherhood, and this blog:

Birmingham

Here’s where our Birmingham chapter began – Match Day 2015!

My husband and I moved to Birmingham two years ago when he matched here for a pediatric residency at UAB. I am from Montgomery, and Carter is from Columbus, GA, so we were thrilled when he opened up the envelope on Match Day and saw we were heading to Birmingham – the closest option to family. One unique component to our move is that I was 36 weeks pregnant! Moving states, buying your first home, birthing your first child, and starting an intense residency all within 4 weeks is enough to make your head spin and make you cry a lot, but we survived and are better for it. While we still feel like we are making Birmingham our home, we are so grateful to be where we are – grateful for the lifelong connections who were quick to welcome us, grateful for our sweet neighborhood (Homewood), grateful for a supportive residency program and the opportunities it brings, grateful for a job I love, and grateful to be exploring this vibrant city with our little family.

Move-In Day…36 weeks pregnant and ready to POP (and take a nap)!

Moms

I, like you, wear many hats, but for now my most important hat is that of being a mom. Carter and I are the proud parents of two-year-old Anna Wells, who is just the apple of our eye. The thing that has both surprised me the most and perhaps that I love the most about motherhood is getting to know myself as a mom. I am the most responsible I’ve ever been. I am the most passionate I’ve ever been. I am the most selfless I’ve ever been. And the crazy thing is, I can’t even help it! I had heard it would happen, and I can confirm that it’s true – there is this biological drive that kicks in when you become a parent, and it makes you downright obsessed with taking the best possible care of your kid. It is a weird and beautiful transformation.

With that said, I need more than just this biological drive to raise my daughter; I need knowledge and external support as well, which has brought me to resources like BMB. I am counting on you, fellow contributors and readers, to teach me how to potty train my child, to give me your best vegetable-sneaking ideas, to hold my hand when I am finally brave enough to transition Anna Wells to a big girl bed, and to give me a dose of perspective and/or laughter now and then. Stick around because before long I will be relying on you to help me finagle college applications and scholarship essays. No pressure or anything!

There I am with my two favorites, Carter and Anna Wells! What cuties.

I obviously have MUCH to learn from others, and meanwhile I am happy to share my tee-tiny piece of the pie with y’all. I mentioned earlier that I am thankful for a job I love. After we moved and immediately had a baby, I stayed home with Anna Wells for a while waiting on the right fit professionally. I am now the Project Manager for the Mountain Brook Chamber of Commerce. Forever a hobbyist-researcher of all things local, and now planning and promoting all kinds of local events through my job, I plan to post frequently about family-driven community events that you do not want to miss. Additionally, with a resident-husband (in other words, he works A LOT) and a full-time job, I am always looking for ways to save money and time, and I will be passing along any tricks of the trade I find. No matter our exact circumstances, we are all so busy in this stage of life so SHOW ME YOUR TRICKS!

Thanks for reading!

Bye y’all,

Molly

Molly grew up in Montgomery and then ventured to Furman University for a degree in Communication Studies. After a year of AmeriCorps service in Denver, working as a camp director in Mentone, and then working for a non-profit in Macon, Molly moved to Birmingham for her husband's pediatric residency at UAB. After moving states, buying their first home, and having a baby within 4 weeks, Molly spent a year at home adjusting to their "new normal”, and she now works full time as the Project Manager for the Mountain Brook Chamber of Commerce. Molly and Carter live in Homewood with their daughter, and they are members of Trinity UMC. On nearly any given night, you will find Molly lying on the couch watching HGTV while scouring the internet for the next local festival/story time/restaurant/bargain in the area. Then she will get veryyyy excited to go to bed.
