Birmingham

I had never set foot in the state of Alabama until four years ago when I came down South to interview for my first job post-grad school. I imagined that it would be flat, hot, and sticky here, and I was right about the hot and sticky part! I am grateful to say that the job worked out, and my family moved to Birmingham in the summer of 2014. Prior to the move, we visited for a weekend where we bought a house (looking back, that was maybe a bit risky!) and got lost a million times. My husband interviewed for a teaching job over the phone (this is virtually unheard of) and miraculously was offered that position; that all of the details fell so beautifully into place affirmed that we were called to build our home and family in the Magic City.

One thing I love about Birmingham is its size; it is big enough to have sporting events, kids’ activities, concerts, and so on, but there are smaller communities within the city that allow families to feel a part of something smaller and more personal. One of the things we love most about the Birmingham area is all of the wonderful public schools here. I am the daughter of public school educators and am married to a public school teacher, so love of public education runs deep for me. We felt that there were many communities we could have chosen to live in that would have provided excellent education for our children, and that can’t be said for every city.

Moms

I am mom to three wonderful little girls who will turn 6, 4, and 2 in May (yes, all girls, all May birthdays!). Our house is full of dolls, tea parties, coloring, and endless dress-up. I love watching these little people learn and grow, and dressing them in cute clothes is fun too, I admit! I am continually learning about what it means to balance work and family as a mother of young children, and the verdict is still out on whether “balance” really exists. However, I am confident that God has given me these precious children to raise and my job to do (well, hopefully), at least for this season. So I will press on and do both to the best of my ability, all the while knowing that neither will be perfect.

Blog

The opportunity to write for Birmingham Moms Blog intrigued me because I enjoy writing but have never really had a platform for which to write. I’ve considered starting a blog a few times before but knew that I wouldn’t be able to dedicate enough time to maintain one on my own, so writing for BMB seems like a great compromise! I love being a mom and also want to encourage other women who are in this fun, but often difficult, stage of parenting young children. I am not convinced that I have a unique perspective, but I think that’s the point. I am just a regular mom working hard to love on and care for her husband and children, and I know that so many others are aiming to do the same. I hope to encourage you, fellow mamas, as you serve your families, your communities, and (hopefully!) maintain your sanity along the way.

Mallory M
Mallory grew up in Oklahoma, met her husband Dave in college there, and they have lived in Maryland, Michigan, and now Alabama since getting married in 2008. She graduated from Michigan State University with a PhD in Exercise Physiology in 2014, and her family then moved to Birmingham so she could start a job as a college professor. She is mom to five great kids ages ten and under, and considers it a tremendous joy to get to invest in the lives of both her kids and her students. In her free time, Mallory enjoys family walks around the neighborhood, reading to her kids, bargain hunting, home improvement projects, and being involved in the children’s and missions ministries at her church.
