Birmingham Moms Blog :: Introducing Dori

3

Hi, my name is Dori. Looking forward to getting to know each other. Here’s the scoop on my experience with Birmingham, Moms, and Blogging. The BMB, if you will.

Birmingham

My husband and I moved to Birmingham in 2009 and absolutely LOVE it here. Since then, I have become a hard core boy mom, so I appreciate the plethora of free/low cost outdoor activities. Every weekend we are hiking Ruffner Mountain, Moss Rock Preserve, Jemison Trail, Oak Mountain, etc. The Birmingham Zoo never fails to entertain, and we like to let our hoodlums loose in the Botanical Gardens.

Also, the people here are so friendly. My son got stuck on the monkey bars this afternoon and like 3 other parents ran to help him before I even blinked. Southern hospitality is really a thing. Once in a blue moon, we do get a date night, and the Birmingham restaurant scene is amazing. And, did I mention that the public schools rock? This is our home now and we are delighted to be raising our kids in such a great, family-friendly town.

Moms

I mom hard for my 3 adorable, energetic 4-year-old boys. Things I love about motherhood include: hugs, kisses, cuddles–all times three. Things I find challenging about motherhood include: laundry, temper tantrums, bottom wiping, the constant chorus of “mom, mommy, mommmmm” … also times three. I dig reading to my children and consider taking care of them a huge privilege. But I constantly struggle to find the patience required to raise three preschool-aged children. I spend most of my days counting to 10 over and over and over again. And I have been known to drink wine while supervising time-outs.

Blog

I am excited to be a contributor for Birmingham Moms Blog because I love connecting with other moms. I fought long and hard to be a mom and I’m so happy to be here. Infertility is a big part of my journey, and I’m excessively comfortable discussing it. You have been warned. Adoption, IVF, surrogacy. You name it. It happened. This put some miles on my heart and has helped me see parenting in a different lens.

Adoption was always part of the plan, and fellow adoptive parents have me at hello. Y’all are warriors and doing God’s work. Becoming a twin mom was not planned, but if your Target cart’s literally overflowing with kids close in age, and folks are stalking you down aisles, staring at their matching outfits like some kind of freakshow came to town – well, hello there, soul sisters. I have found moms of multiples to be a gritty, resourceful group and love ’em.

I really, really did not plan on becoming the ultimate working mom, but here I am rocking it. Just kidding. Most days my business casual is covered in spit up and coffee. I might buy groceries online and text sitters during work meetings. Please join me for discussions on work-life balance (and how that’s a cruel joke!). I love my family and my job and constantly wonder if I am getting either of those things right. We can all have a good virtual cry in the minivan after preschool drop-off. The struggle is real and has provided unique perspective, which allows me to relate to many different “mom tribes.” I look forward to sharing our stories and laughing together.
