A Guide to the Best Date Spots in Birmingham

1

For those of us lucky enough to call Birmingham home, we know the city is a true hidden gem. And what can make the Magic City even more magical than spending some alone time with your significant other by your side? With Valentine’s Day looming, it’s time to think about ways to celebrate, and below is a list of a few of Birmingham’s best date night spots for you to consider on February 14th — or any other day of the year when you need some alone time with your honey!

For a date with a view . . .

If you have been in Birmingham long enough, you know that there are a few key spots to enjoy an overhead view of the city lights. What is it about a city view that is just so romantic? Two of my favorite date night locations that have a top-notch view are Vulcan Park and Museum and Moon Shine rooftop bar. Vulcan is a no-brainer when it comes to the view, and standing on that grated floor, looking over the side of a mountain, in the elements is the perfect combo for some quality snuggles. If you want a little sustenance with your view, I believe Moon Shine is your best choice. Located on top of the Elyton Hotel, Moonshine makes my list because of the comfy layouts on the outdoor decks that feel like you can actually enjoy valuable alone time with your sweetheart.

For a date with your foodie . . .

With James Beard award winners in our own backyard, it’s no secret that Birmingham can hold its own when it comes to great restaurants. If you’re lucky enough to get a reservation, Highlands Bar and Grill has proven that it is the best restaurant in the country. Can’t agree with your partner on where to go for dinner? While it may not be the most “romantic,” I suggest Pizitz Food Hall where you can each pick your own cuisine (or a taste from several restaurants) and grab a drink from The Louis Bar. If you’re a couple who enjoys being social while trying some of the best food in town, you might want to check out booking a Birmingham Taste Tour where you are shuttled with a group from restaurant to restaurant trying signature dishes at each location.

When you’re a little tight on funds . . .

You’re in luck! There are plenty of things you can do even when your wallet feels a little light and still enjoy a quality date. Breweries abound and are a great cost-effective option to enjoy time with your love over a pint. Many breweries also serve a few things to nosh on at a reasonable cost or allow you to bring in your own food. Beer not your thing? You into coffee? There are many coffee shops with comfy little vignettes to get close with your loved one while getting properly caffeinated and saving some cash. Some of my favorites that meet the qualifications for a proper cozy date spot are Red Cat Café, Caviat Coffee, and Church Street Coffee. Lastly, I have to mention the Birmingham Museum of Art. I love strolling with my hubby hand-in-hand perusing all the exhibits. And the best part: this top-notch museum is 100% free to enter. Win/win.

If you MUST bring the kids . . .

The babysitter canceled, your in-laws are sick, and now you’re stuck with the kids on what was supposed to be a night out. Lucky Cat Rolled Creams is an excellent place where you can all have an amazing evening. Rolled ice cream for all — plus wine, beer, or sake for the adults — means there is something for every family member. They even occasionally have a kitchen takeover where they serve dinner. Fun for everyone!

Some places that have to be mentioned . . .

The brunch chilaquiles at Root to Tail was probably the best dish I have eaten in a local restaurant in a while. Check them out for dinner, too, for what I imagine is an excellent dining experience.

This cannot be a “Birmingham’s Best” post without mentioning the following restaurants. Root to Tail is situated in English Village in Mountain Brook and delivered one of the best days out my husband and I have had in ages. The food was outstanding and the service exceptional. It definitely needs to be on your radar for a future date night. Another restaurant receiving praise is Blueprint on 3rd. Take a look at their Instagram . . . I dare you to not drool. Anyone I asked for the best date spot mentioned Satterfield’s as being the most consistently delicious meal in town. Located behind a tardis (the blue phone booth from Doctor Who!) in Avondale is Birmingham’s first (present day) speakeasy, The Marble Ring. This bar is set up in an intimate fashion so you can relax in a plush chair with your lover by your side and pretend you’re Gatsby and Daisy for the evening.

I know this does not even scratch the surface on all the awesome date night locations around town. Where are some of your favorite spots for a night out with your love?
