Ahhh . . . the 4th of July!!! What a jewel of a celebration that’s refreshingly tucked in the hot-as-Hades Alabama summers. With the Fourth falling on a Wednesday this year, I’m sure more people than usual will be sticking around town for celebrations. Here are some fun ways you can grab your slice of Americana around Birmingham:
Fire on the Water — An early round of fireworks, food trucks, and fun at Oak Mountain State Park on JULY 1ST.
Independence Day 1776 — American Village’s Annual Independence Day celebration. They have activities going on ALL day long on the Fourth. What a cool setting and fun opportunity for your family!
Our Lady of Sorrows Fourth of July Festival — 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (during the day!) in Homewood. B-B-Q, bake sales, and thrift sales. It doesn’t get much more Mayberry than this.
Thunder on the Mountain — Thanks to Vulcan Park & Museum for putting on the best fireworks in town! People flood into downtown Birmingham to watch these, although I personally would NOT recommend that unless you are making an evening of it (see below), as traffic is horrific after the show is over. Many people find parking lots at churches, shopping centers, etc. in the Over the Mountain areas and set up camp to watch this show. Works just as well!
UAB Summer Concert — Who doesn’t love a free, patriotic concert?! This would warrant a trip downtown for the fireworks. Starts at 7:00 p.m. Pack a picnic!
Homewood July 4th Festival — 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. — A carnival atmosphere and a great place to view the Vulcan fireworks!
Trussville Freedom Celebration — 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. on Trussville Mall with carnival games, food trucks, and fun.
What am I missing? How will you be celebrating?
