Birmingham

Hi, I’m Kristin and I have lived in Birmingham for 49 years — or my entire life! I was born at St. Vincent’s Hospital and have always been happy to live in this city. I love Birmingham for many reasons including the friendly people, charitable organizations, amazing churches, delicious places to eat, wonderful work opportunities, and Autism resources. That last one is unique. When our oldest son was diagnosed with Autism in 2006, I discovered we were in the right city. There are a multitude of early learning resources here for kids on the Autism spectrum, and we utilized several of them to help our son get the learning support he needed. What a blessing to be in a city with such incredible resources!! I don’t know what we would have done elsewhere.

Moms

I’m a mom to Matthew (15) and Caleb (10 ½). They are fun-loving, rambunctious boys who love football, basketball, and never being still. They are the highlight of my life. I love being a mom and enjoy them immensely. They make me laugh, keep me on my toes, and give me gray hair (all the things boys should do, right?). I didn’t grow up with brothers (or siblings, period), so at times when they have fought or been uncharacteristically active, I’ve had to ask my husband, “Is this NORMAL?!” And he has assured me it is! I love to spend time with them whether we’re playing card games, watching movies, or just hanging out talking. One of the biggest challenges of my life as a mom has been researching Autism therapies for our oldest child and implementing some of those therapies at home when he was young. I would watch our speech therapist and occupational therapist at every session and imitate what they would do throughout the week. I’ve learned a lot about how to help a child with learning differences, and that has made me a much better mom.

Blog

I love to write. When I obtained my degree in mass communication at Auburn University, I was only five hours shy of a double major in journalism. I enjoyed the journalism classes and took as many as I could. I’m excited to write for Birmingham Moms Blog because I love to share life stories. I hope some of our stories and experiences can help others and serve as encouragement to fellow moms. I have the unique perspective of being an older mom (during my second pregnancy I was an “advanced maternal age” mom – thanks, UAB). I’m a “boy mom,” a “special needs mom,” and a “working mom”. I’m a mom who lost her mom in 2017 to a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. We all come at this life with unique perspectives. I’m not a big fan of hardship, but some of the hard things have made me the woman I am today, so I’m grateful to God for using those experiences for my good. The hard things, the humorous things, and the humbling things all make us more relatable to each other!
