Birmingham Moms Blog :: Introducing Tabitha

Hi, I’m Tabitha and I am SO excited to be a contributor on Birmingham Moms Blog!

Birmingham

Although my childhood address said “Trussville”, I have always lived in St. Clair County. Much like The Little House, I watched this small town grow up around me – what was rural when I was a child is now suburban. Now I’m sandwiched nicely between the urban offerings of the Magic City and the rural area of my childhood (my dad still has eight acres of wooded land for all the grandkids to roam on like I did as a child). The suburbs are nice, quiet, with a “small-town” feel most of the time; but, praise be, I have a Publix to shop at. I love the uniqueness of the Birmingham area where I can live close enough to the city to enjoy all that it has to offer and yet still be so close to my rural roots.

I married my “high school sweetheart” in February 2005, and in 2008, we became a party of 3!

Moms

For as long as I can remember, all I ever wanted to be was a mom. The only explanation I have for such a singularly-focused life goal is that I had the best mom in the world and, even from a young age, I so desperately wanted to be just like her. Although, I never in my wildest dreams (or nightmares) would have pictured my life as a mom being void of my own mother. She left this world in April, 2008 – six months before my son was born.

Mom and me – circa mid-80s

I had always wanted several children – how many, I never could decide. But I have been blessed with one with very little possibility for more in the future. But, wow, how fun it is to have an only child! To add even more excitement to our journey, we homeschool also! Homeschooling is an adventure of its own, but homeschooling an only child is a unique dynamic. (And I’m figuring it out as we go!) This is a great area to live in and be a homeschooler – so many wonderful field trip and enrichment opportunities!

There’s really no way I can deny him, is there?

Blog

I’ve been a blogger for nine years now.  I started Saving Toward A Better Life in June 2009 when “coupon blogging” was picking up steam. Maybe you’ve been to one of the many coupon classes I’ve taught in the Birmingham area over the years? My blog helps pay the bills, but when you’ve branded yourself as a deal blogger it’s hard to strike a balance between posting about deals and coupons and savings and then writing about things you love to be able connect with your audience. I started a homeschool blog, Life, Learning, Homeschool, when we started our homeschool journey, but I’ll be the first to admit I do a terrible job of keeping it current. I’m excited to be part of Birmingham Moms Blog because I want to go deeper with blogging, do some real writing, and connect with a new audience!

Our favorite place to be (outside of Birmingham)? Disney World, of course!

Tabitha H
Tabitha has spent her entire life living in various parts of St. Clair County . . . small town life but close enough to the city to enjoy all it has to offer. She's been married to her high school sweetheart for 13 years. Tabitha spends her days as a blogger and homeschool mom to Gavin, a 5th grader who loves animals, books, geography, LEGO, Disney, roller coasters, museums, pirates and karate. Indeed, he keeps her life interesting! Part of what makes it interesting is homeschooling an only child - it's a unique journey! Tabitha loves libraries, good books, history, traveling, coffee, Disney, sometimes cooking (but never cleaning up), being a "karate mom", more coffee, scrapbooking in her free time (ha!) and naps. Around town, you're likely to catch her "field-tripping" with her son at one of the libraries, a park, the Birmingham Museum of Art, McWane Science Center, the Birmingham Zoo, or one of the other dozens of interesting places in the city - and she'll probably have coffee.
