Birmingham

Hello, Birmingham Mamas. I have lived in Birmingham almost my entire life. I was born in Tuscaloosa — Roll Tide! Then we briefly lived in Huntsville before ultimately landing in Birmingham when I was just two years old. When I was six, we moved to our home in Hoover where my parents still live today.

I love living in Birmingham for multiple reasons, but will just share my top two reasons for now.

First, a lot of the people I love are here. My parents live here along with my sister and her family, and this summer my youngest brother and his new wife are moving back.

Second, I love the geography of Birmingham. Being at the tail end of the Appalachian Mountains means rolling hills, lots of rivers and all kinds of plant life. Birmingham has so much bio-diversity and is not a far drive from other diverse places. Want to visit the beach? It’s just a few hours south. Want to visit the mountains? Just head north for a few hours. If you want a bigger city experience, head east to Atlanta. Birmingham is such a fantastic geographical location.

My husband and I have two living children: two boys, Anderson (6) and Calvin (3), and I’m currently pregnant with our baby girl. Sadly, I have miscarried two babies on our journey to grow our family.

Motherhood is challenging in many ways, as you already know. There are physical challenges of pregnancy, birth, recovery, loss (and a different kind of recovery), and just keeping up with little people and all of their needs. Whether your family has grown by pregnancy or adoption, I’m sure you can relate to the physical challenges of motherhood. Some days, I’m just physically worn out. And while I do feel exhausted at times, I’m very grateful for this calling to care for and nurture these little people. I absolutely love getting to watch them grow and learn. In fact, learning along with my children has been one of my very favorite parts of motherhood. Discovering new books together, or learning about new plants to grow in our garden, or learning about the various bugs we encounter is exciting for my boys and for me. We can never know everything so I consider learning a life-long pursuit, and getting to do it with my family is an absolute delight.

Blog

I am looking forward to my opportunity to blog with BMB to share some of our family’s story and what means the most to us. I hope to connect with other moms who share similar interests and can teach me things along the way. I look forward to writing about our homeschool experience, our gardening experience, and sharing about the ups and downs our family has faced in growing. During difficult seasons it has meant so much to me to connect with other mothers who have walked the same road, and I hope to encourage those mothers who might be walking a hard road right now. I absolutely cannot imagine motherhood without the older mothers in my life, or without my peers in the trenches as I am. I’ll share more soon and hopefully we can connect. Thank you so much for reading this, Mama. I know you’re busy!

Meet Laura Wilder. Yes, like the author! In fact, her grandparents purchased the box set of Little House on the Prairie books for her when she was just 9-years-old, long before her last name became Wilder. She’s married to Andrew and they have three children, Anderson (7), Calvin (4.5) & Betsie (infant). They live in Leeds and she stays at home and homeschools following the Charlotte Mason (CM) philosophy. The CM philosophy emphasizes a lot of time spent in nature, which is wonderful because two of their family’s favorite hobbies are hiking & gardening! She loves to connect on Instagram. Find her @wilderfam09.
