Birmingham

As a Southern girl my definition of “home” is where your mama lives.

For the first time in years, I’m “home”.

I grew up in the Southeast, moving every few years until our family settled in Birmingham in the 90s. After attending college in Mississippi, I moved back to Birmingham and married my junior prom date. (We are examples that a carefully selected prom date can greatly impact your life!) As newlyweds we bought our first home in Avondale, before it was the cool thing to do, and enjoyed a life of rediscovering Birmingham by finding the best local cheap food and coffee shops to study. Medical training and advancing my career in hospital administration took us to North Carolina and Mississippi, but “home” was always calling.

We moved back to Birmingham in 2015, and we now live in the Liberty Park community. It is exciting to see how much Birmingham has matured while we were also maturing. We left Birmingham as two newlyweds and returned as a family of four. While we still search for the best local food and coffee shops, we also enjoy our city’s family-friendly markets, festivals, and outdoor adventure spots.

For our family, Birmingham will always be . . . “where the heart is”.

My husband and I always said, “First to get married; last to have kids.” We were indeed the first wedding after college. (As if our after-rehearsal band party didn’t give that away!) Between medical school, graduate school, and the never-ending escalator of career advancement, we struggled to find the “perfect timing” for children. Once we finally took the leap of faith, we never looked back!

We have two fellas, or “gentlemen” as they love to remind me. Spencer, age 6, and Parker, age 5, are great joys! It always amazes me how children can ground you while completely turning your life upside-down. While “First to get married; last to have kids” is our story, we are grateful for our journey and wouldn’t change a thing!

In 2017, I made a difficult and freeing decision to leap off my never-ending escalator of career advancement and striving. During my shift from a traditional career to work-from-home entrepreneurship, I connected with many women who were also seeking a more intentional way of life. Building a community of women is a passion of mine, and I believe it starts by sharing raw, real, and often hilarious stories.

I’m excited to partner with BMB to share my journey and passions and to help foster a community of women.

Kathryn E
Kathryn returns to Birmingham Moms Blog as a guest writer after being part of the contributing team while living in the area. After attending Mississippi State University, she married her high-school sweetheart, and they moved back home (Birmingham) to attend medical school and graduate school at UAB. Their first house was a 1920’s bungalow in Avondale that they renovated before Pinterest and Joanna Gaines. Home renovation would become a hobby or obsession, some might say, in every city they lived. After moving to North Carolina and Mississippi, they returned to Birmingham in 2015, as a family of four. Kathryn and her husband James lived in the Liberty Park community with their two boys and two adopted pups. In 2017, Kathryn's shift from a traditional careerwoman in hospital administration to a work-from-home entrepreneur was equal parts thrilling and frightening. Kathryn has pursued her passion for clean living by partnering with Beautycounter, a clean beauty movement, and she loves having the ability to build a business while simultaneously having a significant social impact. In 2019, their family relocated to Tuscaloosa where they are now renovating yet another home. You can often find Kathryn at a ball field, either cheering for her two boys or passionately ringing a cowbell at a Mississippi State game. (Hail State!)
