Hello everyone! I’m excited to introduce myself and to join the team at the Birmingham Moms Blog.
Birmingham
My name is Abbe and I’m a Birmingham newcomer. My husband moved to Birmingham about seven years ago at the tender age of 19 when he was given an offer to work his dream job. He and I were friends for years before we started dating and I had a pretty strong hunch early on that Birmingham would become my home too. We were married almost three years ago in my home town of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, and I made the long move to this Magic City. Birmingham is a place that we both instantly loved, and while we are very far away from our families, it has been the best possible town for us to grow as a new family and to begin raising our son. We live in the Greystone area and love being close to our church, work, and the convenience of Starbucks, Target, and amazing grocery stores here! One thing I noticed almost instantly when I moved was how family-friendly Birmingham is; there are so many sweet young families, and I’m always running into kind mamas wherever I go (having an extroverted toddler helps with that!)
Moms
I had always dreamed of being a mom, and my husband and I were thrilled to find out that we were expecting a baby shortly after getting married. The excitement quickly turned to nausea that turned into extreme morning sickness and continued through most of my pregnancy. Those nine months turned out to be an adventure in more ways than one! My husband’s job as a film producer required us to move to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma for a movie project, and our son was born via emergency c-section just four days before the movie wrapped up. It was a stressful time, but we were so happy to come home to Birmingham with a healthy baby. Motherhood has broken me in many ways, but also in the best ways, as it is teaching me to rely on God more deeply and how it’s okay to ask others for help when I need it. I’m learning to give myself and other mamas more grace, and I’ve had the crash course in humility that happens when you’re now the person with a screaming toddler in seat 32A of an airplane and it’s nap time. Oh my.
One thing I always say is that “I wish someone had told me how much fun it is to be a mom!” Of course there are hard days and some days where I feel a little more than crazy, but being a “boy mom” has been delightful and I like to think I’ve found my sweet spot in life. Hugo will turn two next January and is a joyful and very active little guy.
Blog
I have really enjoyed finding and following the Birmingham Moms Blog for the past couple years and am thrilled be included on the writing team. Being a stay-at-home-mom can be isolating at times, and so I find that I’m always looking for fun ways to connect with other moms in the area. I have always been someone who processes through writing, and motherhood is a topic that is constantly on my mind. I’m looking forward to meeting many of you and giving my creative side a chance to stretch and grow!
