Spring Cleaning Hacks to Simplify Your Life

I hate spring cleaning. Really, if I’m being honest, I hate cleaning of any kind. I would much rather have someone else do it and just walk in to a fresh, clean home. Unfortunately, I’m not in the stage of life where hiring outside help is feasible right now, so it’s (mostly) up to me to get the work done. Our best spring cleaning hacks will help you simplify you life. Use these hacks to freshen up your home this spring.

Spring Cleaning Hacks

I’ve asked my fellow Birmingham moms and other awesome friends to share some of their best spring cleaning hacks with you today, but if I’m being honest, this post is mostly for me. I just thought I’d play nicely and share their genius ideas with everyone else!

Kitchen Hacks

My favorite kitchen hack is probably the easiest. Before you pile your dishes into the sink, fill it up with hot water and soap. Deposit your dishes and walk away. When you come back, rinse them off and put them in the dishwasher. No scraping and scrubbing for you!

Fellow hacker, Morgan K., shares, “If you have any stainless steel appliances baby oil does WONDERS to leave them shiny and streak-free.” I had no idea about this tip, so I was grateful to Morgan for pointing it out to me!

“Put baking soda in the drain and pour vinegar on top. It will make the drain smell better, but stand back because it bubbles. Also, vinegar and water will clean cabinets and blinds really well. I cleaned all my shutters last year with vinegar and water, and it made them whiter. Just cleaned all the doors a few weeks ago with the same mixture,” Kimberly C. tells me. I am so impressed with the cleaning power of such simple ingredients.

Spring cleaning hacks for the home include using an air filter spray to freshen the whole house.

Household Hacks

“Spray a filter spray on your air filter about 10 minutes before your guests arrive,” BMB contributor Melissa B. says. “It makes the house smell wonderful!” I had never even heard of filter sprays before Melissa shared that tip, but I’m glad I know about them now!

One of our founders, Julie S., had this to say, “We do a 15 minute roundup at our house! Everybody pick up what’s yours in the common areas (den, living room, dining room) and put them up. Sometimes make it fun by making it a ‘Woody’s Roundup’ like at Disney World.” As a mom of Disney loving kids, this is perfect! Make it a game, and kids are more likely to help.

My friend, Larisha, who has a fantastic blog, We’re Parents, told me, “Vinegar, water, and lemon juice can clean almost any surface. Much cheaper and no chemicals.” I love having green, semi-crunchy friends who share tips like this to help my cleaning be a little more eco-conscious.

Brooke B. shared, “You would be amazed at what all your dishwasher will do. The dusty globes of my fan lights come out sparkling!” Say what, Brooke? She assured me that her ceiling fan lights, on the top rack of her dishwasher, were safe and clean when the rinse cycle was done. I can’t wait to try this hack out myself!

Bathroom Hacks

Stephanie W., a BMB contributor, says, “If you’re in a rush and people are coming over, just pour Pine Sol in the toilets, let sit for a bit, then flush. They will think you cleaned your whole house!” I love hacks like that! What a great way to get your house smelling fresh, fast!

My favorite bathroom hack is using a multi-purpose cleaning cloth that can clean the sink, counter, mirror, and toilet rim (not all at the same time, mind you). I recommend finding a multi-purpose product with multiple uses that can cut down on the amount of time you spend cleaning each area of the bathroom.
