Birmingham

My husband and I moved to Birmingham in July of 2013. I graduated college from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan two weeks prior to our move and had recently returned from studying abroad in Italy. My husband (fiancé at the time) caught me on the tail end of my adventurous spirit and convinced me to move to Alabama, where he had family and had vacationed for years. When we told people where we were moving, we received many confused looks and a lengthy list of questions. We sold all of our furniture, packed up our two tiny sedans, and headed for Birmingham with our cat to keep me company along the way. After 10 quick hours headed south on I-65, we found ourselves arriving to our hotel in the midst of 280 rush-hour traffic. While completely and utterly annoying, I found comfort in knowing that Birmingham was big enough for there to be traffic of that magnitude.

After one year of being miserably homesick, I started to fall in love with Birmingham. I started planning our wedding here in the heart of downtown. This led me to different bridal shows, venues, vendors, and caterers. I started to learn Birmingham through the planning process. We wed in November of 2014 and brought all of our loved ones to Birmingham to celebrate. With our hearts set on staying in Birmingham, we decided to start a family here.

On November 10th of this past year, our sweet baby boy Parker joined our family. While we were excited to welcome Parker into our new home here in Homewood, he had different plans. Parker was unexpectedly born with a congenital heart defect. He spent the first month of his life at Children’s of Alabama. He has been in and out of the hospital since his birth. While some days can be challenging, I find such joy in being his advocate. We loved Birmingham before Parker was born, but now we love Birmingham for being a place where Parker will have an abundance of resources at his fingertips.

We are not sure what Parker’s future looks like, but we know that Birmingham is the place for him. Our journey may not look like everyone else’s, but that is what makes me excited to share our story. I look forward to watching Parker grow and fall in love with Birmingham the same way we have.
